June 27th, 2023 Proclaimed Robert "Bob" McQuillen Day

At the meeting held on June 6th, 2023, the Select Board took great pride and pleasure in proclaiming June 27th 2023 as Robert "Bob" McQuillen Day:

WHEREAS Robert “Bob” McQuillen was a veteran, teacher, musician and composer who enriched the lives of everyone who knew him; and

WHEREAS
Bob McQuillen’s served his country in World War II and the Korean War, and as an instructor discovered his love of teaching; and

WHEREAS
Bob McQuillen graduated from the Keene Teachers’ College (now Keene State College) in 1959 and taught industrial arts at the Peterborough High School and ConVal High School until his retirement in 1984, but continued to substitute teach well into the 1990s; and
WHEREAS Bob McQuillen was known to his students as “Mr. Mac” volunteered as a coach and encouraged many students who may not have otherwise graduated to stay in school; and

WHEREAS Bob McQuillen was a lifelong musician, having learned to play the guitar and accordion as a teenager, then learning piano from Ralph Page while he was a musician in the Ralph Page Orchestra, and later joining the Canterbury Country Dance Orchestra who often played in the summer dance series in Peterborough, as well as many other smaller bands; and

WHEREAS Bob McQuillen was himself a composer of over 1,600 jigs, reels, hornpipes, marches and waltzes collected into fifteen volumes known as “Bob’s Note Books”, included one piece for each of New Hampshire’s 234 towns and cities; and

WHEREAS Bob McQuillen has received many awards and recognitions, including the New Hampshire Governor’s Arts Award in Living Folk Heritage in 1997, represented New Hampshire at the 1999 Smithsonian Folk Life Festival, was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2002 and was presented with the Lifetime Contribution Award from the Country Dance and Song Society at the New England Folk Festival in 2008; and

WHEREAS Bob McQuillen dedicated himself to his nation, his students, and to spreading the joy of country dancing and keeping country dancing vibrant for many generations of Americans; and

WHEREAS Bob McQuillen had made it widely known that if he lived to see his 100th birthday he would celebrate it seated at the town’s piano playing for the dancers in the Upper Hall of the Peterborough Town House;

RESOLVED, that the Select Board of the Town of Peterborough declare June 27, 2023 Robert “Bob” McQuillen Day.
